I cut my own hair today...and it was exhilarating!
Let me back up.I have very challenging hair. I don’t say this with false modesty. I have a mild/moderate case of alopecia (hair loss) along with extremely fine hair. Under normal circumstances, I don’t hesitate to call upon the talents of a professional hairstylist. But, as everyone on the planet knows, these are not normal circumstances. So, back to this morning. What greeted me in the bathroom mirror was a discouraging sight. Seemingly overnight, my short hair had become overgrown, shaggy, and frumpy, a.k.a the very last adjective you want to be thrown in your direction when you’re over a certain age!My first thought was, “Oh well, I knew this day was going to come.” But then it hit me. I could trim the worst areas myself. I have no idea where this thought came from as I had never previously, not even once, entertained the thought of cutting my own hair. Impulsively, I decided to follow this bolt of inspiration, grabbed a pair of scissors from my home office, and got to work. The first snip was the most difficult, but then it got surprisingly easy.

And it was exhilarating! I felt like a pioneer and an adventurer. I felt powerful. I felt like a doer and a shaker, not like a victim. So, here’s my challenge to each of you: during this time of staying close to home, find some way to stretch yourself. In reality, cutting my own hair was low risk; after all, who is going to see me as I live alone and my hair will grow back. But, even so, it was a behavior totally outside my normal repertoire. I can’t describe the sense of freedom and accomplishment that doing this small but radical act gave me.Just because our worlds have become temporarily smaller, doesn’t mean we can’t still be explorers.Click HERE to learn more about the Wellview services available to you.
