Diabetes burnout is real! Are you staying in touch with your emotions as you manage your diabetes? Tracking blood sugars, planning meals, taking medications, and staying active are all important lifestyle behaviors for feeling good physically but can have an emotional impact, leaving you feeling drained and overwhelmed.

Your Wellview Care Team is ready to help you take inventory of your emotions and provide a safe place to talk openly and honestly about the way you are feeling.

Did you know that depression and diabetes are clinically linked together? Around 10% to 15% of people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes also experience depression. Depression can make managing your diabetes a real challenge or make the disease worse.

It’s important to recognize the symptoms of depression and speak with your healthcare provider(s) about the way you are feeling. Treating depression is part of treating diabetes.

What does depression look like?

  • Persistent sadness or anxiety, a feeling of emptiness
  • An overriding feeling of hopelessness and negativity
  • Feeling helpless and powerless to change your situation
  • Loss of interest in activities or pleasures
  • Lower energy and increased fatigue
  • Insomnia, oversleeping, awakening early in the morning
  • Concentration problems, memory problems, and indecisiveness
  • Dwelling on death or suicide
  • Restlessness
  • Weight change and decreased or increased appetite

Depression is a vicious cycle and can result in poor diabetes management or diabetes related complications.

The Journal of the American Medical Association published a study that found team-based care resulted in improved diabetes and depression outcomes. In other words, tender loving care (TLC), having a support system, and building a trusted relationship with your care providers are all crucial in managing diabetes and depression.

Navigating the current healthcare landscape can be very difficult for finding physicians and physician specialists to support you. Every person is unique in what their treatment plans needs to include.

Wellview is well positioned to support you in building a care team that can provide you with TLC.  From a dedicated personal Health Advisor, a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist, a Certified Personal Trainer, a Registered Dietitian, and a Licensed Mental Health Specialist just to name a few.
