Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is extremely common in adults, with over 3 million reported cases per year in the U.S. alone. The condition requires a medical diagnosis which can present overlapping symptoms of similar conditions such as panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and other types of anxiety. Let's dive in a bit further, and learn how we can live with and overcome this condition.

Cause

The cause of GAD can be based on the individual, but increased risk is often associated with factors like familial history of anxiety, prolonged stress or trauma, excessive consumption of tobacco and caffeine and illness.

Symptoms

Symptoms of GAD, just like causes, can vary from person to person. However, common symptoms include:

  • Restlessness
  • Irritability
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Fatigue
  • Pain in the back
  • Abnormal Sweating
  • Undesired thoughts
  • Feelings of fear worry or impending doom
  • Unusual headaches

Treatment

There are several treatments that have been proven to support GAD. Generally one’s medical doctor will work alongside with or refer the individual to a psychiatrist or clinical physiologist. Medications sometimes prescribed for GAD are antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and anxiolytics. Medication is not always required for proper treatment. Other treatments include exercise, stress management, relaxation therapies, and counseling.
