Quick, Fun, and Healthy Halloween Treats

Halloween can be rather tricky to manage if you're also trying to keep a healthy diet, with a lack of ready-made options for you and the family. Personally, I love getting in the holiday spirit for Halloween so why not make it a fun experience that everyone can enjoy by making your very own treats! Here are a few ideas to try out this Halloween.

Boo Bananas

Peel your banana, cut it in half and set with the pointy end at the top. Using a very small icing piper, pipe some almond butter or peanut butter in place of its eyes and mouth. Place dark chocolate chips or dried fruit on each spot. Enjoy your ghostly treat!

Cutie Pumpkins

There is no doubt pumpkins are the symbol of Halloween. Purchase a stalk of celery and a bag of nectarines or (aka cuties). Half the celery stalk and cut into ½ - 1 inch slices. Peel the nectarine. Place the pre-cut celery stalk in the top-center of the nectarine. Naturally it looks much like a pumpkin. If celery isn’t your kids' pick, try pretzel sticks instead.

Berry Scary Spiders

Using a large, whole strawberry for its body, insert a few small pretzel straws on each side of the red berry. Add some small blueberries, raspberries or blackberries at the ends of each pretzel stick and insert a few more into the small berries so that it appears your berry spider has long legs. Once complete, garnish your spider with the eyes of your choice!

Witches Broomstick

At this rate, pretzel sticks are a must have for your Halloween treats. Slice a mozzarella stick in halves or thirds, depending on how long you want the straw of the broom. Use a knife or scissors to cut the fringe pattern for the broom straw. Insert the pretzel stick into the top of the sliced mozzarella.  Tie a chive around the top center of the cheese and your witchy treat is ready to serve.

Yummy Mummy Apples

This time of year, apples are ready for pickin’ so make an adventure out of it for the kids! Take them to the local apple orchard to pick out the apples they want to use for this Halloween-suited treat. Take your whole apples, pluck off the stem and use your fruit or vegetable peeler to peel the skin off the apple into a mummy like design. Use an icing piper to squeeze a treat of caramel in place of the half covered eyes, nose and mouth or simply use those yummy dark chocolate chips from the Boo Bananas. To keep the apples from browning, like they will naturally do, mix a bowl of water with some lemon juice and throw in the apples. Now the mummies are ready for the kids to bob for their delicious halloween treats.
