The first Friday of March marks Employee Appreciation Day. By definition, appreciation is the recognition and enjoyment of the good qualities of someone or something, and there are many ways to express and receive different types of appreciation. So let’s take the guesswork out of this day with some fresh ideas!
1. 'Free to focus' time
The intention of free to focus time is to allow your employees the opportunity to do something that fills up their cup. Allow your employees time for themselves to accomplish the thing(s) on their list that they want to get done at work, home, and/or in their community without the pressure or expectation of constantly checking their inbox. Giving a day, a half day, or even an hour of free time helps establish a culture that places value on employee self-care.
2. Note of gratitude
When is the last time that you have received a handwritten note of thanks for all that you do? By expressing gratitude for the contribution that your employees make for your team, you shift the focus to the value they bring to the business by simply doing what they do. A word of thanks can go a long way.
3. Gift of thanks
Imagine walking up to your desk at work to find a giftcard for coffee or a little happy for one of your personal hobbies. Not only can a gift help lighten the financial load that employees may carry for the little things in life, but it can also put a smile on their face with the knowledge that you are simply thinking of them. Who doesn’t want to be the reason someone smiles today?

4. Lunch on the house
Everyone’s got to eat! Catering food for the entire team or sending a coupon code for food delivery to each of your employees can be a great way of saying, “Let me take care of you today.”
5. Listen with compassion
Employees are humans, too, and they have lives outside of work. Setting aside time to get to know your employees through compassionate conversation can not only make you feel more connected, but also help your employees feel heard, seen, and understood in all of life’s responsibilities and obligations.
6. Public acknowledgement
Speaking of human-ness, some enjoy external validation that they are doing a great job. Setting up quarterly awards, or just highlighting the hard work of your employees in a weekly meeting can positively encourage them to keep up the good work.
7. Growth and learning opportunities
Employees dedicated to their craft often seek ways to improve and grow their skill sets. Offering compensation for continued education or resources that help them improve their work lets your employees know that you want to invest in them so that they grow and flourish in your company.
