Imagination: the Magic of the Season

Imagination could be the magic you need to make positive change happen for the new year, or more importantly, your life. By imagining an outcome or vision you have for yourself, you can connect to the feelings, beliefs, and embodiment that occurs when you are living that life. However, imagining a different life than what you are experiencing can sometimes be difficult, if not impossible. So let’s think through this together.

Can you recall a time in life where you could imagine things that may not have even existed?

For some, this may be a recall as far back as when you were a child with an imaginary friend or a really vivid pretend state. I know that for me as a child, I had a firm belief that Santa Clause was in fact a real life human being that could and would come into my parents’ home through a doll-sized chimney flue and into a medium dog-sized wood stove. I never doubted the magic that I believed Santa to have.

For others, even as an adult, imagining comes easy. You may imagine sitting down for a tasty meal after a hard day's work, or running the 10k you have been training tirelessly for, or even living in your first home that you have yet purchased. For me as an adult, I do well imagining when I am in a creative state, meditating, or setting goals that I am REALLY excited about. Outside of that, I truthfully struggle to get out of my own way so that I can imagine anything other than what I am circumstancing at present.

And that’s just it; imagination comes when we are able to get out of our own way in order to play and get curious about what could be. Imagination is the ability to perceive something different—whether small or grand—in our lives.

So I have a few journaling questions to leave you with that are intended to help you tap into your imagination a little more.

  • When was the last time that you can recall your imagination being strong?
  • How old were you?
  • What was it like to be this age?
  • What did you enjoy? What did you believe?
  • How did you feel?
  • Now, if money or time was no object, what would you like to do differently?
  • What would need to change in order for you to achieve this?
  • What would change as a result of this change?
  • How would that alter how you feel from your present feelings?
