Fitness is a journey not a destination

The piece of advice I wish someone in the fitness world told me!If you are reading this, it is likely that you desire what most people desire: to be fit! But let me explain the one thing that most fitness professionals and healthcare providers do not always point out (but SHOULD) at the beginning of your journey of leading a healthy lifestyle through fitness.

Fitness is a Journey, not a Destination!

In her book Hot Body Year Round, world-famous fitness instructor and youtuber Cassey Ho writes,

Fitness is a journey. Fitness is not an overnight endeavour or a quick success. Fitness is time, patience, humility, effort, motivation, commitment, perseverance, support. The list is as long as a marathon, but just like any journey, you lace up your shoes, review your goals and GO!

I couldn’t agree more, Cassey! But I will take it a step further and tack on the ever famous quote by Raplh Waldo Emerson, “Life (or Fitness in this case) is a journey, not a destination.” Though this particular quote can be interpreted in several ways, what I intend for “Fitness is a journey, not a destination” to mean is this.To be healthy and fit is not something you acquire in a short period of time and then just forget about it. Fitness is something you work on day-in and day-out. Just like life you have days that are harder than others and then you have days that are easier. There is no final end to this journey of being fit, rather fitness is the journey that you have chosen to embark on and dedicate your lifestyle and daily habits to despite its many strifes. As a Health Coach, I want to help you “lace up your shoes, review your goals and GO!” Try this simple exercise to assess your current goals or reset some new ones that better serve you HERE and NOW!

EXERCISE TO SMARTer GOALS!

Draw and label Person A (you right now in this moment) on the left hand side of a piece of paper and, and then draw and label Person B (future you) on the right hand side of the paper. You do not have to be an artist (my stick figures work just fine)! Make sure you leave a gap between the two persons. Now in that gap draw a bridge from Person A and Person B. This gap/bridge will be your fitness journey. Now underneath Person A describe your fitness journey as of present. This can include feelings, thoughts, habits, health conditions and so on. Now do the same under Person B but in this case describe the fitness journey that you would absolutely love to have in the future (keep it real!).Now underneath your gap or bridge describe the steps you need to take in order to cross the bridge to the other side. These steps have no limit so you can have three steps or more, but try to narrow it down as much as possible (no more than 9-12). Now under each step, write down the actions you will need to take in order to be successful at the given step.In case the written instructions do not make sense, I have provided an example above! SMART goals can be tough to narrow down and figure out. Luckily you can take advantage of working with a health coach.
