Firing up the grill for a summer cookout usually means meat is on the menu. But if a plant-eater is joining your BBQ, you might want to mix it up! Consider some of these veggie-based options that might even fool your carnivore friends.
Fake Meat Burgers
Running the gambit from "can’t-believe-it’s-not-meat" to legume-based patties, there are plenty of burgers that mimic the texture and flavor of traditional burgers. Check in the freezer section of your grocery store, and make sure to look at the ingredients and nutritional information. Some of these burgers have more sodium than you might expect.
Jackfruit
Like tofu, jackfruit has become a versatile and welcome addition to the plant-based lifestyle. It’s easily substituted for chicken and pork, and soaks up the flavor of any sauce you cook it with. Jackfruit is found in the produce section of the grocery store, and some are pre-made with sauce and ready for the skillet or crock-pot!
Tofu Steaks
Frequently substituted in place of chicken or pork, extra-firm tofu performs well on a grill, and a light marinade and seasoning will add your flavor of choice. Grill the tofu for 6-8 minutes per side until the tofu is slightly charred and cooked all the way through. Simply brush it with extra marinade, and it's ready to serve!
Veggies!
Yes, your good old-fashioned vegetables do well on the grill, too! Toss broccoli or cauliflower in olive oil, sprinkle with salt, pepper, and garlic, and keep it moving on the grill until it is cooked to your taste. Cauliflower, when sliced, can even be placed on the grill like a steak.Move beyond meat for your next BBQ, and impress your vegetarian friends with the flavors and aromas of summertime grilling!
