Turn Down the Heat for Summer Exercise

Whether you welcome warmer, sunnier days or decide to hibernate in the air conditioning all summer, exercising in the heat needs a little extra attention. Stay safe this summer and turn down the heat with these tips.

Dress the Part.

A great workout doesn’t depend on the latest active wear trends, but having a good set of lightweight, wicking shorts and shirt really can help you feel cooler. The fabric pulls moisture away from your skin and helps prevent overheating. You don’t have to spend a lot to look (and feel) cool!

Adjust Your Schedule.

In the summer, the best times to exercise may be in the early morning or late in the evening, when the sun’s rays are less intense and you may have a chance for lower humidity. Get out there first thing in the morning for your sweat fest and cool off with a cold shower!

Okay, Maybe Just a Cool Shower.

Have you ever found that after a summer workout, you are still sweating even after your shower? It can take a long time for your body’s temperature to return to normal, and a cooler than usual shower can help.

Jump In the Pool!

Aqua workouts can be surprisingly strenuous, even though they feel like play! Signing up for a water aerobics class during the summer is a great way to stay active, try a new form of resistance training, make new friends and stay cool.

Expect to Slow Down.

Even seasoned athletes have an off-season. Expect to slow down your pace and intensity when the temperature rises, and pay attention to your body. Listen to signals that you need to take a break, such as feeling clammy or shivering in the heat. Don’t push it – safety first!

Drink Water All Day Long!

The need for hydration feels natural when we are hot, so keep that water bottle filled up and drink it all day. When exercising, take in about a cup of water every 15 to 20 minutes. Cool down afterwards with refreshing water-rich fruit like watermelon or grapes!

The summer heat has nothing on you! Keep moving, and adjust as needed during the summer to stay fit and active. Be safe, and have fun!
