Alkaline Diet: Your Best Self-Gift?
There are many ways you can view health and wellness through the scope of diet. Looking at the pH level of your food is one of these ways. pH is measured on a scale of 1-14. To be alkaline means to have properties of an alkali (chemical compound that neutralizes) or to have a pH greater than 7. This is opposite of being acidic which is to have a pH less than 7, or to have the properties of acid. A pH of 7 is considered neutral. In fact, when in homeostasis, your blood is considered slightly alkaline (mostly neutral) with an average pH of 7.35.

Since the blood in your body is slightly alkaline, some doctors, nutritionists and other healthcare providers will encourage a diet focused on alkaline foods. However, many healthcare professionals remain fairly uninformed of the effects of “acidosis” on the human body. Those that are studying it have concluded similarly to Naturopathist and author of alternative medicine, Dr. Robert Young:
Physiological disease is almost always the result of too much acid stressing the body’s pH balance, to the point where it provokes the body into producing symptoms of disease. (Disease can also be simply the toxic effects of an external source, but that is much more rare.) Symptoms can be the expression of that stress, but they can also be asign of the body’s effort to balance it.

A diet high in animal products like meat, eggs and dairy is considered high in acid producing foods versus a diet high in fresh vegetables which is considered more alkaline. Moreover, consumption of acid-producing processed foods such as sugar, soft drink acids, alcohol, coffee and white flour can greatly contribute to an acidic internal environment.

It's important to understand that an acidic pH in the human body can be a result of various factors including an acid-forming diet, emotional stress, toxic overload, immune reactions, autoimmune disorders or a combination thereof. The magical body will try to compensate for an acidic pH by using minerals that are alkaline. But if the diet does not contain enough minerals to balance the body’s pH, a build up of acids in the cells will occur which can be extremely detrimental to an individual's overall health. The Green Smoothie Girl and Author Robyn Openshaw writes in her guide 12 Steps to Whole Foods, “When our internal terrains becomes acidic, yeast, mold, bacteria, viruses and fungi thrive." As a result, the you can experience further health problems.
